The extremely fast vibrations cause the rapid formation and collapse of small bubbles in the liquid; this is known as cavitation.
The tiny bubbles act like a gentle yet powerful scrubbing brush that cleans all of the surfaces of the item being cleaned: deep pores and crevices on the tools are also cleaned.
