Uncertain about the steps to becoming a licensed barber in California? This ultimate guide provides a clear and concise roadmap.

We’ll break down the program requirements, exam details, and application procedures, ensuring a smooth path to your barbering goals.

Enroll in a Barber Program

Enroll in a Barber Licensing Program

This is your first step to becoming a barber in California: getting the education! The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) approves barber programs throughout the state, ensuring they meet rigorous educational standards.

With many schools offering programs, you’ll have the flexibility to find one that aligns with your learning style, schedule, and budget.

Completing the Training Program

California mandates 1,000 training hours, blending theory and practice. In technical instruction (150 hours), learn sanitation, hair science, haircutting techniques, and client consultation.

Hone your skills with hands-on training (850 hours), mastering cuts, fading, and beard grooming under instructor supervision.

Approved apprenticeship program available! If classroom learning isn’t your style, consider a BBC-registered apprenticeship.

You’ll gain real-world experience under a licensed barber while accumulating training hours. It takes longer, but it offers a learn-and-earn approach.

To qualify for this route, you must be at least 16 years old, have completed at least the 10th grade, and possess a valid social security number.

Pass the Licensing Exam

California Senate Bill 803 (SB 803), implemented in January 2022, modified the licensing process by eliminating the practical exam.

Now, you focus on demonstrating your theoretical knowledge through a written exam developed by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC).

This computer-based test ensures you possess the fundamental understanding necessary to provide safe and effective barbering services.

Expect to encounter 40 multiple-choice questions covering a wide range of barbering topics. For instance, you might be tested on:

  • Sanitation and Disinfection: Understanding proper sterilization procedures for tools and equipment to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Hair Science: Identifying different hair types and textures to tailor haircutting techniques for optimal results.
  • Haircutting Techniques: Demonstrating knowledge of various scissor and clipper methods to achieve specific styles, like fades and tapers.
  • Barber Shop Operations: Knowing proper product usage and client consultation techniques to understand client desires and ethical business practices.

To take these exams, you must be at least 17 years old and have completed at least the 10th grade. The examinations include both practical and written (theory) parts, and upon passing, you will be issued a California barber license.

People with criminal convictions are still eligible to apply for the examination. They should fill out and submit the “Disclosure Statement Regarding Criminal Pleas/Convictions” form along with their application or as an attachment to their online submission.

It’s important to provide comprehensive details about the conviction. If the information supplied is insufficient, the board might ask for more documents related to the conviction, leading to delays in the application process.

Securing Your Barber License

Now, you’re one step closer to becoming a licensed barber in California. Here’s a breakdown of the application process:

  1. Gather Your Documents: The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) requires specific documents to verify your qualifications. These typically include:
    • Proof of passing the NIC written exam.
    • Official transcripts from your barber program (or documentation of apprenticeship completion).
    • A completed application form (available on the BBC website).
    • Two passport-sized photos.
  2. Submit Your Application:The BBC allows online and paper applications. For online applications, visit the BBC website and follow the instructions.
  3. If applying by mail, download and print the application form, gather the required documents, and send them to the BBC address listed on the form.
  4. Pay the Fees: Don’t forget the licensing fee! The current fee ( $125 ) can be found on the BBC website. Payment can typically be made online or by check or money order included with your mailed application.
  5. Await Processing: The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will review your application and documents. Processing time for an online application is approximately 3 weeks faster than for mailed applications.
  6. Mailed applications can take up to 8 weeks to process. Once approved, you’ll receive your official California barber license in the mail.

Maintaining Your Barber License

The good news is that barber licenses in California only require renewal every two years on your original licensing date (odd-numbered years).

Renewal is a breeze compared to the initial licensure process. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Renewal Fee: The current renewal fee is $110; if the license expires, it will cost you $135 to get a new one. Payment can be made online or by mail.
  • No Continuing Education: Unlike some professions, California doesn’t mandate continuing education courses for barber license renewal. However, staying updated on the latest barbering trends and techniques is highly recommended.

Why stay on top of your game? The industry constantly evolves, with new tools, products, and styles emerging.

By attending workshops, subscribing to barbering publications, or even following industry influencers on social media, you can ensure you’re offering your clients the best possible service and staying ahead of the competition.

Remember, a sharp barber is a successful barber!
